There is a formula to figure out how far lightning is from you. When you see the lightning, count the seconds until you hear the thunder. Sound travels much slower than light, so if there is a 6 second difference, the lightning is a mile away. If you see and hear them at the same time, you may not be in the safest of places.

We had a tornado go through our town once. The drive-in had all 4 screens destroyed and survives as a flea market. The Jamesway was destroyed and for years, I dreamt that all the toys were somewhere else. I remember that because the thunder and lightning happened at the same time. Animals were going crazy. It felt like electrical currents were in the air and that reality could fall apart.

I don't like tornadoes, but I do love rain.
